Core, Required NCD Training Materials: Introductory Materials

Below is a list of NCD-focused core training materials that can be given during an Introductory Course.  They can be taught to all FETP trainees or only those specializing in NCDs.   All training modules are instructor-led and contain PowerPoint presentations, Facilitator Guides (with copies of slides and instructions/guidelines) and Participant Guides (with copies of slides and exercises).

Click on the module name to access the facilitator and/or participant materials.  The modules that have not been cross cleared by the Center for Global Health and the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion will say “DRAFT” on the training materials.

Introduction to NCD Epidemiology

2 1/2 hours

Describe how you will use epidemiology to address a public health problem.

Overview of NCDs and Related Risk Factors[1]

4 hours

  • Describe modifiable risk factor(s), non-modifiable risk factor(s), and metabolic risk factor(s) associated with each NCD
  • Discuss culturally appropriate ways of measuring the NCD and related risk factors in their setting

NCD Burden of Disease

3 hours

  • Calculate incidence, prevalence and mortality.
  • Apply definitions of DALY and QALY.

Prioritizing Public Health Problems

2 hours

  • Identify the key stakeholders and partners with whom to prioritize public health problems
  • Identify the criteria for prioritizing public health problems
  • Reach consensus on the two highest priority NCDs on which to focus prevention and control efforts

NCD Surveillance in Public Health

4 hours

  • Identify whether a non-communicable disease (NCD) surveillance system is active or passive.
  • Draw a diagram of a surveillance system that depicts where data is collected, analyzed, and disseminated.
  • Describe the strengths and limitations of a surveillance system in terms of data collection, analysis and dissemination of information.
  • Describe at least one recommendation to improve a surveillance system.

Data Sources for NCD Surveillance

2 hours

  • Identify the strengths and limitations of surveillance data sources.
  • Select and explain the source of data to use.

NCD Prevention and Control

2 hours

  • Describe action items for accomplishing at least three of the WHO objectives from the 2008-2013 global strategy in your own country.
  • Describe potential barriers to implementing the recommendations and how to overcome them.

Recommending Evidence-Based Interventions for NCDs[2]

6 hours

Given information about a priority NCD and related risk factors and access to a computer:

  1. Draw a causal diagram to describe the NCD or risk factor.
  2. Use the Community Guide to identify one evidence-based behavioral intervention and one policy, systems & environmental (PSE) intervention to address the NCD identified.
  3. For each evidence-based intervention:
    1. Describe how to adapt it to the local culture.
    2.  Select one relevant behavioral theory and explain how it can be used to create and/or implement the intervention.
    3. Describe two factors other than scientific evidence that might impact intervention selection or implementation.
  4. Defend identified interventions with evidence to key stakeholders.
