Investigation of an outbreak of Cholera in Sae Saboua (District of Guidan-Roumji - Maradi) _ Niger _ August 2010

Background: Cholera is a very contagious infectious disease due to Vibrio cholerae. An estimated 3-5 million cases and over 100,000 deaths occur annually worldwide. In August 2010, suspicious cases of gastroenteritis were notified in the district of Guidan-Roumji and Nine (9) cases were recorded in the health center of Saé Saboua . Therefore, an investigation was conducted with the objective of describing the epidemic, determining the causal agent, and setting control and preventive measures.

Gastroenteritis Outbreak at Rehabilitation Institute. Buenos Aires, Argentina, November, 2009

Introduction: On November 17, 2009, health authorities were notified of several gastrointestinal cases in adults at a rehabilitation institute. We initiated an epidemiological investigation to confirm the presence an outbreak, identify the causal agent, and to establish control measures.

Pandemic Influenza A H1N1 Outbreak in Bushenyi District, Western Uganda, 2009

Background The Pandemic Influenza A H1N1 virus was first detected in April 2009. It is associated with sustained human to human transmission mainly through droplets. On 18 September 2009, a suspected H1N1 outbreak was reported in Kitabi Seminary School in Bushenyi district in Western Uganda. Objective of the investigation: To confirm the outbreak, identify the causative agent, describe and manage the outbreak.

Outbreak of Acute Watery Diarrhea at Central Jail Kot Lakhpat, Lahore, Pakistan -2009

Background: On August 30, 2009, the Superintendent at Kot Lakhpat Jail, Lahore reported a large number of acute watery diarrhea (AWD) cases with severe dehydration. An outbreak investigation was carried out to confirm the diagnosis, identify the risk factors and make recommendations for control.

Outbreak of V. cholera in a rural area of Punjab, Pakistan-August 2009

Background: On August 14, 2009, District Health Authorities were informed about an increased number of acute watery diarrhea (AWD) cases in a village of Arifwala tehsil with two deaths. A team was sent to investigate the outbreak, confirm the diagnosis, identify the risk factors and recommend control measures.

A Norovirus Outbreak Caused by Improper Infection Control Practices in a Nursing Home: Guangdong Province, China, March 2010

Background: On March 1, 2010, a norovirus outbreak was reported in Guangzhou City nursing home in Guangdong Province, China. 29 residents of the nursing home developed symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. 26 stool specimens were positive for norovirus by RT-PCR. We investigated to identify the cause and the mode of transmission of the outbreak, and to recommend prevention and control measures.

An investigation of Salmonella typhimurium food-borne outbreak among funeral guests ? Terenozek village, Kizlorda Region, Kazakhstan, May 8-12, 2010

Background: May 8-9, 2010, 94 patients with diarrhea were hospitalized in Kizlorda Region in Kazakhstan. Patients attended a funeral lunch in a household in Terenozek Village on May 8. We carried out an investigation May 13-18 to identify factors contributing to disease occurrence so that similar outbreaks can be prevented in the future.

A mixed Outbreak of Cholera & E.coli in Sanjauli area of Shimla Municipal Corporation, Himachal Pradesh, India, July 2010

Background: Diarrhoeal diseases cause 4% of deaths globally & 5% in India. In Himachal Pradesh, diarrhoeal outbreaks occur in rainy season due to contamination of water sources. On 13th July 2010 medical college Shimla reported increase in diarrhoea cases from Sanjauli, Shimla. We investigated to identify the cause, possible exposures and implement control measures.
