A Measles Outbreak in a Highly Vaccinated Population (“Measles in Burundi”)

An outbreak of measles occurred in health sector Muyinga (Burundi), several years into an apparently successful vaccination program.  This case study addresses estimation of vaccine coverage and vaccine efficacy in the field.

 

Objectives:

  • Discuss methods for estimating vaccination coverage;
  • Describe the difference between a convenience sample and a probability sample;
  • Describe the sampling method used in WHO-EPI surveys; and
  • Calculate and interpret vaccine efficacy.
